My buddies like the ca-dmv-bot on twitter, which shows a sampling of vanity plate applications that were reviewed by the CA DMV from 2015 to 2016. It includes a lot of vulger language, fair warning.

The original twitter bot has its code available on github which also references the original source for the data. I decided to throw together a little webpage that would randomly generate new plates. That site is available at ides.club/~trefulo/plates and its source code is on local git.
